Can Nanotechnology and Solar Power Solve the Electricty Problems in Sydney, Australia

Only a week or so ago I wrote a piece for the MyAZoNano newsletter that included my thoughts that we would see nanotechnology driven advances in solar energy resulting in widespread adoption of solar electricity. The result would be a dwindling demand for coal fired electricity as homes and businesses become electricity self sufficient.

It seems that with a bit of forward thinking, this could well come quicker than even I was considering. Problems with electricity supply in Sydney, Australia has resulted in 20 large buildings being asked to ensure their own back up electricity supply. Here's a link to an article on the power problems. I know they'll take the easy route and just rely on diesel generators designed to kick in when the power fails, but I'd love to see them clad the exposed surfaces of the buildings in solar panels for some clean green electricity.

Couldn't agree more. For me the major problem is the lack of a feed-in tariff arrangement that would effectively "rig" the market and reward anyone for generating power from solar.

However, the dollars generated by the coal industry and the limited time in power for pollies probably means we're stuck with so called short term "Clean Coal" technologies.
